Why Do Blinds Fade?
The louvers and many other parts of your blinds are often made from a type of plastic called PVC. Ultraviolet radiation causes PVC parts to fade, turn yellow, and become brittle when exposed to the sun. Fortunately these problems can be largely avoided by mixing an ultraviolet inhibitor with the plastic during manufacturing.
Titanium dioxide is a naturally occurring substance used in everything from paint to cosmetics to food coloring. It is used in sunscreens because it reflects UV rays. Titanium dioxide is also an expensive PVC additive that can keep the plastic from deteriorating when exposed to the sun. In blinds, as in sunscreen, a higher percentage of titanium dioxide gives better protection from the sun.
