ABOUT US
Past

Exceptions is Joanna and Michael, a mother and son team carrying on a family tradition of providing quality products, exceptional service, and expert design advice. Founded by Joanna and her then husband Jim in 1980, the business was originally known as The Designers Workroom of Plymouth, Michigan. The company relocated to Florida in 1989, and was incorporated under the name of Exceptions of Bradenton, Inc. in 1994.
Joanna says, "I studied interior decorating in college, but the real expertise has come from working in the business for more than twenty-five years. I learned from the bottom up, and I think that hands-on experience is part of what makes our company different."
Another unique aspect of the business is the focus on family. "Both of my sons grew up surrounded by the business of creating home interiors. Our first workroom was attached to the house. They grew up with this, so it was only natural for them to work in this field. It's what they know best."
Present

Michael says, "Since 1999 my personal focus has been on window décor - blinds, shutters and shades. With so many new and innovative products available this has really become a specialty." To reflect this growing emphasis on window coverings, in 2004 the business was renamed Exceptions Blinds, Furniture and Design Inc.
In 2005 the company purchased a commercial building to house the company's offices, warehousing facilities, and drapery and upholstery workroom. "We also have a long-arm quilting machine, for making custom quilted bedspreads," Joanna adds.
Future

Asked about future plans for the business Michael had this to say: "We have chosen to keep our company at a size that allows us to be personally involved in every job. I am able to give great service and also keep costs down because I take tremendous care at every step - from designing, to measuring, to ordering, to installation. You can't get this from a salesperson or a subcontractor; you only get it when the person performing your work truly cares about your satisfaction." |
